About this tradition
The main festival of the village that bears its patron saint's name. Maria de la Salut celebrates on 8 September with a processó that fills streets whose layout has barely changed since the 18th century.
History & origin
The municipality takes its name from the Marian devotion of la Salut, venerated in the parish church since its construction in the 16th century. Maria depended on Santa Margalida until 1836. This is deep dry-farming country: cereal, almonds and sheep.
How it is celebrated
A novena beforehand, solemn processó on the 8th with the image under a canopy, and verbenes in the plaça des Pou. There is a glosa competition and ball de bot. The village triples its population in those days with those who return.

Associated gastronomy
Melon from Maria, much prized in the Pla and exactly in season in September. Arròs brut, frit and apricot coca. Roasted almonds from the local dry fields.
