About this tradition

Santanyí's main festival in the middle of July, when the municipality of Mallorca's finest coves recovers for a few days its character as an inland town, with the golden stone of Santanyí as the setting.

History & origin

Santanyí was a fortified town facing corsair raids: sa Porta Murada still stands. Its stone — the marès of Santanyí — built cathedrals and palaces across Mallorca and even on the mainland. Sant Jaume, patron of pilgrims, has presided since the 13th century.

How it is celebrated

Processó from the parish church, correfoc through sa Porta Murada, verbenes in the plaça Major and an organ concert in the church — the Santanyí organ, from the 18th century, is one of the finest in Europe and is played during the festival.
