About this tradition
The shortest night of the year in the smallest village of the Tramuntana. Estellencs has fewer than 400 inhabitants and celebrates Sant Joan with bonfires facing the sea, between terraces and cliffs, in one of the most intimate festivals in Mallorca.
History & origin
The parish of Sant Joan Baptista in Estellencs dates from the 13th century. The village lived off olives, vines and fishing from the cala of Estellencs, and its isolation — the road did not properly arrive until the 20th century — preserved its traditions almost untouched.
How it is celebrated
Bonfires in the square and at the viewpoint over the sea. Ball de bot with the local group, ximbomba and gloses. Being such a small village, the festival belongs to everyone: there is no audience, only participants.
