About this tradition
The main festival at the gateway to the Serra. Bunyola celebrates Sant Mateu as summer ends and the Orient valley starts to change colour, with a week of events culminating in the processó on the 21st.
History & origin
The parish of Sant Mateu de Bunyola is documented from the 13th century, after the Catalan conquest. The village grew around water: the springs of the Serra that fed the orchards and made Bunyola a summer retreat for the Palma bourgeoisie from the 19th century.
How it is celebrated
A week of events with glosa competitions, truc tournaments in the bars and the ball dels cossiers when the year allows. On the 21st, solemn mass and processó. The verbena is held in the plaça de sa Font, beside the water that gave the village its name.
