About this tradition
Late-summer festivities at the foot of the Serra. Campanet celebrates Sant Miquel with a processó that leaves a 13th-century church and winds through a village whose layout has barely changed in 700 years.
History & origin
The church of Sant Miquel de Campanet is one of the oldest in continuous use in Mallorca, dating from the first Catalan resettlement in the 13th century. Sant Miquel, the archangel who weighs souls, was patron to a community of dry-farming peasants used to measuring every harvest.
How it is celebrated
Processó with the archangel's image, dimonis in the correfoc on the eve, and ball de bot in the plaça Major. The festival coincides with the end of the early olive harvest and the start of the matances.
