About this tradition
The most important fairs of the Mallorcan migjorn and among the oldest on the island. Three Sundays in October of market, livestock and crafts, culminating in the Darrera Fira, the busiest, with thousands of visitors from all over Mallorca.
History & origin
The Llucmajor fairs are documented from the 16th century, when the king granted the town a fair charter. Llucmajor, with the largest municipal district in Mallorca, was the commercial centre of a region of dry farming, sheep and almonds. The Darrera Fira keeps that character of closing the agricultural year.
How it is celebrated
Display of farm machinery, Mallorcan-breed sheep, leather crafts — Llucmajor had a significant shoemaking industry — and hundreds of stalls all through the centre. The Darrera Fira includes the livestock show and parade.
