About this tradition

The feast of Mallorca's patron saint at the island's most important sanctuary, in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana. Every 12 September the Moreneta of Lluc receives pilgrims from every village.

History & origin

Legend places the finding of the image in the 13th century by a converted Moorish shepherd, Lluc, who found it among the rocks. The sanctuary is documented from 1268 and has been the spiritual centre of Mallorca ever since. The Blauets choir — boy singers dressed in blue — has sung there since 1531.

How it is celebrated

Solemn mass with the singing of the Blauets, who perform the Salve to the Moreneta. Organised pilgrimages arrive from many villages. The surroundings — the Camí dels Misteris del Rosari, the botanical garden — fill with families making a full day of it.
