About this tradition

At Midnight Mass (Matines), a boy soprano dressed as the Sibyl — in a tunic, embroidered silk mantle and holding a great sword — sings the Cant de la Sibil·la: a medieval apocalyptic prophecy about the end of the world. It survived only in Mallorca and L'Alguer (Sardinia). UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2010. Performed in 157 Mallorcan churches; the most celebrated Matines are at the Lluc Sanctuary and Palma Cathedral.

Associated gastronomy

Hot chocolate with ensaïmada or potato coca after mass. Neules wafers, artisan nougat, roast suckling pig.
